How to choose a mantra
Begin with what you need. The right mantra is usually the one your life is already asking for.
There is no single right mantra. There are only mantras that fit the moment you are in.
Ask yourself, honestly: what is my life asking for right now? Peace? Courage? Healing? Devotion? Focus? Let that answer guide the first mantra you take up.
If peace is the answer, begin with Om Namah Shivaya, So Hum, or Om Mani Padme Hum. If healing, the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra or the Medicine Buddha Mantra. If courage, Hanuman's mantra or Durga's. If devotion, the Hare Krishna Mahamantra or Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya.
Choose one. Stay with it for at least a few weeks. The mantra will meet you.
