A sacred sound, syllable, or phrase repeated as spiritual practice.

From the Sanskrit roots 'manas' (mind) and 'tra' (instrument). A mantra is an instrument of the mind — a sacred sound repeated to focus attention, quiet the psyche, and invoke a sacred quality.
